When it comes to painting a room, it's important to follow the correct order of operations to ensure a smooth and professional finish. Here are the five steps you should follow:
Prep: Before you start painting, it's essential to prepare the space. This includes moving furniture out of the room, covering the floor with drop cloths, removing outlet plates, and sanding and wiping down the trim and walls.
Trim: Once the room is prepped, you'll want to start by painting the trim. This includes any baseboards, door frames, and window frames. Use a paintbrush (or sprayer) to apply the paint, and be sure to get a smooth, even coat.
Edging: Next, you'll want to edge around one wall. This involves painting a thin line of paint along the edge where the wall meets the ceiling, baseboards, and any other surfaces. Use a 2.5" or 3" paintbrush to get a clean, straight line.
Roll: Once you've finished edging, you can start rolling the paint onto the wall you just edged. Doing one complete wall at a time will ensure that the edging and rolling blend well together. Start on the left side of the wall and work your way slowly to the right (or reverse if you are left handed), completing about 6 feet at a time, top to bottom, before moving on to the next section. Use a paint roller with a nap that is appropriate for the surface you are painting.
Repeat: Once you've finished rolling the paint onto one wall, repeat steps 3 and 4 on the remaining walls. Be sure to allow the paint to dry completely between coats, and follow the manufacturer's recommended drying times.
By following these steps in the correct order, you can ensure that you get a professional-looking paint job that lasts for years to come.
